Don Quixote

Don Quixote is one of the great nineteenth-century choreographer Marius Petipa’s most brilliant productions

While Don Quixote has always endured the reputation of a sad knight, there is nothing sad about the one-act ballet based on the novel The Ingenious Hidalgo don Quixote of La Mancha. Contrary to expectation, the performance is full to the brim of good humour and optimism.

Don Quixote is one of the great nineteenth-century choreographer Marius Petipa’s most brilliant productions, done to music by Ludwig Minkus. The show premiered in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on December 14, 1869. The technically sophisticated ballet with its brilliant innovative choreography made an overwhelming impression on the audience. It has never failed to create one ever since.

Celebrated choreographer Alexander Manoshkin has managed to reinterpret the classic play as a ballet suite. Every single move in the Russian Ballet production is seamlessly woven into the fusion of music and dance. They share the theme but vary in nature and technique, which gives the show its extremely dynamic and intense character.

The virtuoso solos performed by Russian Ballet artists include the legendary 32 fouettés, sensual pas de Deux and graceful minuets. Together with picturesque scenery and over 100 unique costumes, the show manages to create a magical reality that transports the viewer into the sultry climate and fiery temperament of southern Spain.
